Two women of the Telangana countryside in Vaikuntam’s unmistakable idiom: broad, simplified forms, flat fields of saturated colour and the large bindi and kohl-rimmed eyes that recur through his work. Trained at the Government College of Fine Arts, Hyderabad, and at Baroda, Vaikuntam has spent five decades painting the people of his village near Karimnagar.

Thota Vaikuntam paints the men and women of his native Telangana in broad, simplified forms and flat fields of saturated colour. Trained in Hyderabad and at Baroda under K. G. Subramanyan, he has drawn for five decades on the village life, festivals and folk theatre of Karimnagar.
