Krishna as the flute-playing cowherd, in the flat, bold outline and earth-pigment palette Jamini Roy drew from Kalighat pat painting and Bengali folk art. Roy abandoned academic realism in the 1920s to make an art ordinary people could own; his Krishna subjects are among his most loved.
