French Cityscape, 1960

A cityscape from Raza’s Paris years, painted in 1960 as the artist moved from the expressionist townscapes of his early French period towards the gestural, colour-led abstraction of the following decade. Roofs, walls and sky are compressed into a dense weave of ochre, grey and red, laid on with the palette knife.
